23 - 3 (4 - 1) = 14 - 8 (4 - y)

Find the value of y.

As we know,

The order of these opperation are the following;

  • Perform all operations within grouping symbols first. Grouping symbols include parentheses ( ), braces { }, brackets [ ], and fraction bars.
  • Evaluate exponents and roots of numbers, such as square roots.
  • Multiply and Divide, from left to right.
  • Add and Subtract, from left to right.

So as per this question, first we can solve the operation within the brackets.

\bf\longmapsto{23-3(4-1)= 23-3(3)}

\bf\longmapsto{23-3(3)=23-3\times3}

\bf\longmapsto{23-9=14}

As per the given condition,

\bf\longmapsto{23-3(4-1)= 14-8(4-y)}

We know the value of LHS now.

\bf\longmapsto{14= 14-8(4-y)}

\bf\longmapsto{14=14-8(4-y)=14-(8\times4-8y)}

\bf\longmapsto{14=14-(32-8y)}

On removing brackets,

\bf\longmapsto{14=14-32+8y}

\bf\longmapsto{14=-18+8y}

\bf\longmapsto{14+18=8y}

\bf\longmapsto{32=8y}

\bf\longmapsto{\dfrac{32}{8}=y}

\bf\longmapsto{4=y}

∵ The value of y = 4.
