Answer: 2 valance electron :Mg

7 valance electron:cl

Explanation: X:cl

Y:Mg

Mg + Cl gives rise to MgCl2

Balanced : Mg+ 2Cl gives rise to MgCl2

X has 7 valence electrons and Y has 2 valence electrons.

We know,

Mg has 2 valence electrons in it's last orbit and Cl has 7 valence electrons in it's last orbit.

So, Y = Mg and X = Cl

Now,

Mg + Cl2 = MgCl2

It is a type ionic bond as Mg releases it's last two electrons and Chlorine accepts it so that both can get the octave form in it's last orbit.

Hope it helps
