Given:

23 g ethanol is dissolved in 36 g of water.

To find:

The mole fraction of ethanol.

Solution:

The molecular mass of ethanol is 46 grams and the molecular mass of water is 18 grams.

Thus the number of moles of ethanol is 23/46=0.5 moles.

Thus the number of moles of water is 36/18=2 moles.

The total number of moles is 2+0.5=2.5

Thus mole fraction of ethanol is given as-

The number of moles of ethanol/total number of moles.

 \frac{0.5}{2.5} \\ = 0.2

The mole fraction of ethanol is 0.2.
