(i) Functions of the stomata

They allow the exchange of gases (CO2 and O2) with the atmosphere. Evaporation of water from the leaf surface occurs through the stomata. Thus, the stomata help in the process of transpiration. Based on the climatic conditions, it closes or opens its pores to maintain the moisture balance.

(ii) Guard cell function

Guard cells are cells surrounding each stoma. They help to regulate the rate of transpiration by opening and closing the stomata. Light is the main trigger for the opening or closing.

Explanation:

i. The main function of stomata is to open and close the pores in the leaves for an exchange of gases.

It allows the plant to take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen for photosynthesis.

Based on the weather conditions, it closes or opens its pores to keep the moisture content developed.

ii. Guard cells are cells surrounding each stoma. They help to regulate the rate of transpiration by opening and closing the stomata. Light is the main trigger for the opening or closing
