Mahesh spend Rs 1920 on purchasing only the calculators

Solution:

Let "x" be the price of each calculator

Let "y" be the price of each pen stand

Mahesh purchased three calculators and  four pen stands for Rs 2140

3x + 4y = 2140 -------- eqn 1

He then  purchased an additional calculator and five  pen stands for Rs 1355

x + 5y = 1355 -------- eqn 2

Multiply eqn 2 by -3

-3x - 15y = -4065 ------ eqn 3

Add eqn 1 and eqn 3

3x + 4y = 2140

-3x - 15y = -4065

( + ) ---------------------

-11y = -1925

y = 175

Substitute y = 175 in eqn 2

x + 5(175) = 1355

x = 1355 - 875

x = 480

Thus price of each calculator is Rs 480

He has bought totally 4 calculators

4 calculators = 4 x 480 = Rs 1920

Thus, Mahesh spend Rs 1920 on purchasing only the calculators
