sodium ( NA ) reacts with chlorine(CL) to form Sodium chloride (NaCl). according to the equation

sodium having 0 oxidation state in reactant side which convert into +1 on product side.

chlorine having oxidation state 0 on reactant side which convert into -1 on product side


so sodium act as a reducing agent because it giving its balance electron to chlorine atom to reduce chlorine to chlorine anion


chlorine act as a oxidizing agent because it takes away the sodium atom and oxidized sodium atom to sodium cation.
