23. Table given below shows a part of the periodic table.

H He
Li Be B C N O F Ne
Na Mg Al Si P S Cl Ar
Using this table explain why
(a) Li and Na are considered as active metals.
(b) Atomic size of Mg is less than that of Na.
(c) Fluorine is more reactive than chlorine.

Answer:

Explanation:

(a) Li and Na belong to group one and have only one valence electron which they lose easily. Thus they are active metals as they react easily losing their valence electron.

(b)The number of electrons increases by 1 across a period and hence the nuclear attraction on valence electron increases, thereby reducing the atomic size. Thus atomic size of Mg is less than that of Na.

(c)Since chlorine has a higher electronegativity than chlorine(highest electronegativity in the periodic table), thus fluorine is more reactive than chlorine.

hope this helps:)
