Answer :

Let A = x

B = 1200-x

(As when you sum up, there must be 1200. Suppose, A = x and B =                       x-1200 and if you add these you get 2x + 1200, but it is given that they have    1200 between them. Therefore, A = x and B = 1200 - x).

Now, as A spends 12% of his money = (1 - 12/100)x = 88x/100

Now, as B spends 20% of his money = (1 - 1/5)(1200 - x) = (4800 - 4x)/5

Given, sum is 85% of the whole sum.

Whole sum is 1200

left over Sum = [(88x)/100] + [(4800 - 4x)/5]

                      = (96000 + 8x)/100

As given in the question,

= (96000 + 8x)/100 = 85/100 * 1200

= 96000 + 8x = 1020 * 100

= 96000 + 8x = 102000

x = 750

Now, A is left with 88x/100

= (88*750)/100

= 6600/10

=660

Therefore,  A is left with a sum of Rs.660
