24. A submarine sends out a sonar signal (sound wave) in a direction directly downward. It takes 2.3 s for the 'sound wave to travel from the submarine to the ocean bottom and back to the submarine. How high (approx) up from the ocean floor is the submarine? (The speed of sound in water is 1,490 m/s.):
A. 1,700 m
B. 3,000 m
C. 5,000 m
D. 9,000 m

Answer:

a

Explanation:

since Time for Two way is 2.3 secs

therefore for single way = 1.5sec

Speed = 1490m/s

Dist = Speed*time = 1490*2.3 = 3427

Since the 2(Distance) = 3427                 (Since SOnar goes from ship to bottom and then to Ship)

Therefore D = 3427/2 = 1713.5 meter

Hence option (a) = 1700m
