In the following cases will a precipitate of the less reactive metal be obtained - a) When zinc is added to an aqueous solution of copper sulphate -

  • In this case, a precipitate of the less reactive metal will be obtained.
  • The metals in their decreasing tendency of liberating hydrogen gas, i.e. reactivity are in the order- Ca > Zn > Fe > (H) > Cu
  • The metals above hydrogen can liberate hydrogen gas from the solution while metals below hydrogen cannot.
  • When zinc will be added to an aqueous copper sulphate solution, zinc will displace copper and hence precipitate of copper will be obtained. This is because zinc is more reactive than copper.

(b) Iron is added to calcium chloride solution

  • Fe is less reactive than Ca.
  • Hence, iron cannot displace calcium from calcium chloride solution.

(c) Copper is added to calcium chloride solution

  • Cu is less reactive than Ca.
  • Hence, copper cannot displace calcium from calcium chloride solution.

(d) Iron is added to zinc sulphate solution

  • Fe is less reactive than Zn.
  • Hence, iron cannot displace zinc from zinc sulphate solution.
