Non-Alignment Movement

It is an international organization that is dedicated to representing the interests and aspirations of developing countries. It is an independent movement that enables each nation to follow its own policies without joining either of the superpower blocs. This has become one of the biggest peace movements in the world. The movement originated as representatives of the African and Asian countries assembled at Bandung in Indonesia in 1955, the  Non-Aligned Movement was initiated here as an effort by some countries to avoid the polarized world of the Cold War between Communist and Capitalist states. In the early 21st century the Non-Aligned Movement counted 120 member states. The Non-Aligned Movement was founded by Jawaharlal Nehru from India, Josip Broz Tito from Yugoslavia, Gamal Abdel Nasser from Egypt, and Sukarno from Indonesia.

  • As a condition for membership, the states of the Non-Aligned Movement cannot be part of a multilateral military alliance. The founding of the Non-Aligned Movement, its stated aim has been to give a voice to developing countries and to encourage their concerted action in world affairs.
  • Mutual respect for each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty
  • Mutual non-aggression
  • Mutual non-interference in each other's internal affairs.
  • Equality and mutual benefit, The Non-Aligned Movement espouses policies and practices of cooperation, especially those that are multilateral and provide mutual benefit to all those involved. Almost all of the members of the Non-Aligned Movement are also members of the United Nations. Both organizations have a stated policy of peaceful cooperation, yet the successes the NAM has had with multilateral agreements tend to be ignored by the larger, western- and developed- nation-dominated UN
  • Peaceful co-existence, The movement has continued to advocate for international cooperation, multilateralism, and national self-determination, but it has also been increasingly vocal against the inequities of the world economic order.
