Heat energy is required to break the bond between atoms/molecules. In solids, the atoms are closely and tightly packed. The intermolecular attractions are greater here. To loosen the attractive force, and make more intermolecular spaces, high amount of energy is required.
The heat energy can also be called Thermal Energy.
