Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the eminent scientist of India was born on October 15th, 1931 in the island town of Rameswaram, Tamilnadu. He was elected as the 11th president of India and there is no doubt that Dr. Kalam is the best President of India so far. He is also known as ‘’The Missile man Of India’’ and “The People’s President”. After finishing his schooling at the Schwartz Higher Secondary School, Ramanathapuram, Kalam went ahead and joined Saint Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli. After completing BSc, from the Madras Institute of Technology, in 1958 he began his career as a scientist at DRDO. He worked with the INCOSPAR (Indian National Committee for Space Research) under the renowned space scientist Vikram Sarabhai in the early 1960s and also designed a small hovercraft in DRDO. In 1963-64, he visited space research centers in Virginia and Maryland. Having returned to India APJ Abdul Kalam began to work on an independently expandable rocket project at DRDO. Later he was happily transferred to ISRO as project manager for the SLV-III. SLV-III is the first satellite launch vehicle designed and produced by India. He was appointed as a Scientific Advisor to the Minister of Defense in 1992. In 1999 he was appointed as the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government of India with the rank of Cabinet Minister.

For his remarkable contribution to the nation, APJ Abdul Kalam has been awarded with prizes such as Bharat Ratna (1997), Padma Vibhushan (1990), Padma Bhushan (1981), Indira Gandhi Prize for National Integration (1997), Ramanujan Prize (2000), King Charles II Medal (in 2007), International Prize von Karman Wings (in 2009), Hoover Medal (in 2009) and many more.
