These are lighthearted speeches usually with a high degree of humor. What sets them apart from stand up comedy is they usually make some kind of point where standup can jump all over the place on topics.
Another interesting little factoid is that to a company that hires an entertaining “speech” the speech is most likely fully tax deductible where a pure entertainment act like standup comedy may only be 50% tax deductible as “entertainment”.
I came from the entertainment industry just before I started speaking professionally. I quickly learned that you could get booked more often being an entertaining speaker rather than a “humorist” or comedian. It’s harder for the company to justify your payment to their stockholders if you are just entertainment as opposed to a business expert who happens to be fun and funny.
