26. Based on the following data, prove the law of reciprocal proportions.
(a) 4.49 g of metal combines with 0.64 g of hydrogen to give metal hydride.
(b) 12.65 g of metal combines with 8.43 g of nitrogen to give metal nitride.
multiple proportions is obeyed.
The % of nitrogen in ammonia is 82.35 %.

Explanation:

Case 1 : 4.49g of metal M combines with 0.64 g of Hydrogen so ratio is 4.49/0.64 = 7 : (1) ...1 (Just divide it and keep ratio with 1)

Case 2 : 12.65g of metal M combines with 8.43g of nitrogen so ratio is 12.65/8.43 = 1.5 : 1

But we want ratio of metal M to remain same, according to the law, so divide 7 with 1.5 which is 4.66 and multiply the ratio with it.

1.5x4.66 : 1x14.66 = 7 : (4.66) ...2

Ratio of Hydrogen to nitrogen can be taken from 1 and 2

Which is 1 : 4.6

Case 3 : Given % of nitrogen is 82.35 so % of hydrogen is 100-82.35 which is 17.65

ratio of nitrogen to hydrogen here is 82.35 : 17.65 which is 1 : 4.6

Since the ratio are equal or a multiple then the Law of Reciprocal Proportion is obeyed

Hence Proved
