Steam is passed over a hot coke (at 1000oC) in a special type of a furnaces called converters. In this step carbon reacts with water to form carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas. In this step excess of steam is mixed with water gas and entire mixture is passed over heated ferric oxide and chromic oxide.
