The correct question is :

"Tree Plantation Drive"

A Group Housing Society has 600 members, who have their houses in the campus and decided to hold a Tree Plantation Drive on the occasion of New Year. Each household was given the choice of planting a sampling of its choice. The number of different types of saplings planted were (i) Neem - 125 (ii) Peepal - 165 (iii) Creepers - 50 (iv) Fruit plants - 150 (v) Flowering plants - 110. On the opening ceremony, one of the plants is selected randomly for a prize. After reading the above passage, answer the following : What is the probability that the selected plant is (i) A fruit plant or a flowering plant ? (ii) Either a Neem plant or a Peepal plant ?

(i) Probability of selecting a fruit plant or a flowering plant for prize = 13 / 30

(ii) Probability of selecting either a neem plant or a peepal plant for prize = 29 / 60

• Given,

Number of Neem saplings planted = 125

Number of Peepal saplings planted = 165

Number of Creeper saplings planted = 50

Number of Fruit plant saplings planted = 150

Number of Flowering plant saplings planted = 110

Total number of saplings planted = 125 + 165 + 50 + 150 + 110 = 600

• Probability of an event (P) = Number of favourable outcomes / Total number of possible outcomes

(i) Probability of selecting a fruit plant or a flowering plant (P₁) = (Number of fruit plants + Number of flowering plants) / Total number of plants

=> P₁ = (150 + 110) / 600

=> P₁ = 260 / 600

=> P₁ = 13 / 30

(ii) Probability of selecting either a neem plant or a peepal plant (P₂) = (Number of neem plants + Number of peepal plants) / Total number of plants

=> P₂ = (125 + 165) / 600

=> P₂ = 290 / 600

=> P₂ = 29 / 60
