(c) Inhabitants of Greece, Serbia and Croatia

  1. The Slavs have a history that dates back to the 5th and 10th centuries. The ancient Slavs were tribal societies spread across Eastern and Central Europe.
  2. By the end of the eighth century, the Slavic population had grown and the groups had begun to spread to other areas.
  3. Early Slavs were predominantly Christian and lived in Christian states such as Croatia, Serbia, and Poland.
  4. Along the rivers, these people established sunken settlements known as "Grubenhauser." The stone ovens found in the corners of the buildings are still a feature of Eastern European homes today.
  5. Many Slavs now practise Christianity. The majority of Slavs in the eastern and southern Slavic countries are Eastern Orthodox, while Roman Catholics live in the western and southwestern Slavic countries. Atheists, Muslims, and Protestants are among the Slavic religious minorities.
