28. A box contains 12 red cards, 6 black cards and some white cards. The probability of drawing a white card is

Let us assume that, the box contains x number of white cards .

so,

→ Total number of cards in the box = 12 + 6 + x = (18 + x)

→ Probability of drawing a white card = (1/3)(Probability of drawing a red card + Probability of drawing a black card)

→ x / (18 + x) = (1/3)[{12/(18 + x)} + {6 / (18 + x)}]

→ x / (18 + x) = (1/3)[(12 + 6) / (18 + x)

→ x / (18 + x) = (1/3) * (18 / 18 + x)

→ x / (18 + x) = 6 / (18 + x)

x = 6 (Ans.)

Hence, the number of white cards are 6 .
