Cherrapunji lies on the windward side of the Garo-Khasi-Jaintia hills. It receives rain from the Bay of Bengal Branch of the South West Monsoon Winds as it is in their pathway. Hence, it receives heavy rainfall. Shillong is located on the leeward side, which is a rain shadow area and hence, receives less than 200 cm of rainfall in a year.
