Question :

What is epidermis? List functions of epidermis.

Answer :

The epidermis is the outer and the thinner part of the skin.

  • It is formed of stratified epithelium.
  • It is joined layer after layer.
  • In some places, the epidermis is thick and hard such as on the Palms, soles and on the heels.

It has three sublayers depthwise :

  • Outermost cornified layer
  • Middle granular layer
  • Inner malpighian layer.

The outermost cornified layer is composed of flattened dead cells performing protective function.

  • These cells are made up of a fibrous structural protein called Keratin which are found in our nails, hairs.

The middle granular layer is a very thin middle layer.

  • It consists of two or three flattened calls which gives the way to the outermost cornified layer.

The malpighian layer is the innermost layer and region of the epidermis.

  • It is also called as germinative layer.
  • Its cells actively divide and produce new cells.
