Silver halides, AgX where, Ag is silver and X is any element of halogen group is used in white and black photography.
This is beacuse, when Silver halide is exposed to sunlight, it gets darkened due to the bond breakage, also called photoelectric effect.
Also, it gets reduced due to sunlight and that's why it is helpful in getting image and thus used in black and white photography .
The commonly used silver halides are AgCl ( Silver Chloride ) , AgBr (Silver Bromide) and AgI (Silver Iodide) .
