The position of certain elements in the Modern Periodic Table are shown
below.
Group
1 2 3 to 12 13 14 15 16 17 18
Period
152
Using the above table answer the following questions giving reasons in each
case :
1)Which element will form only covalent compounds?
2) Which element is a non-metal with valency 2 ?
3) Which element is a metal with valency 2 ?
4)Out of H, C and F which has largest atomic size?
5) To which family does H, C and F belong?

Answer:

  1. group 14... carbon as it has 4 valence electrons so it makes covalent bond

Explanation:

5) H does not belong to any family it has its own position in periodic table. it belongs to period 1.

carbon belongs to carbon family ( group 14) & Flourine belongs to halgons (group=17)

4) C has largest atomic size as size decreases across the period and increases down the group

3) All the elements of group 2 have valency 2 (as they lose 2 electrons to become stable) and are metals. From period 2 and 5, it is calcuim and barium. ( No element from period one)

2) All the elements of group 16 have valency 2 (as they gain 2 electrons to complete their octet) and are non metals. From period 2 and 5, it is oxygen and tellurium. (No element from period one)

1) Noble gases (group 18) forms only covalent compounds as they have completed octet & are quit stable and form only covalent compounds ( not sure about this one). From period 1, 2 and 5, it is helium, neon and xeon.
