Given :

  • Pressure = 0.5 atm
  • Initial volume = 400 cm ³
  • Final volume = 200 cm³

To find :

  • Work done

How to solve :

  • Simply substitute the the given values in the formula inorder to find the unknown variable.

Solution :

Work done on the gas is given by ,

⇒ W = - P ΔV

⇒ W = - P ( V' -  V )

Now let's substitute the given values in the above equation ,

⇒ W = - 0.5 ( 200 - 400 )

⇒ W = - 0.5 X - 200

⇒ W = 100 atm / cm³

⇒ W = 100 X 0.001 atm L

⇒ W = 0.1 atm L

Unit conversion

→ 1 atm L   = 1.01325 × 10^5 Pa L

→  1 atm L   = 101325 N/m² × 10^-3 m^3

→  1 atm L   = 101.325 Nm

Hence ,

1 atm L    =101.325 J

So ,

⇒ W = 0.1 x 101.325 J

⇒ W = 10.1325 J

Hence ,

The work done is 10.13 J  .
