the correct answer for this question will be (b) ∆G is positive for a spontaneous reaction

Gibbs free energy formula to be used here is:

                           ΔG = ΔH – TΔS

Δ G=change in the Gibbs Free Energy

Δ H=change in the enthalpy

T=temperature measured in Kelvin

Δ S=change in the  entropy

different cases in this situation depending upon the values of ΔH , ΔS and T can be as follows:

  1. if ΔG is less than zero then the reaction is spontaneous
  2. if ΔG is greater than zero then the reaction is non spontaneous
  3. if ΔG is equal to zero then the reaction becomes reversible

now checking the options

  • (a) true statement because of (3)
  • (b) wrong statement because of (1)
  • (c) true statement because of (1)
  • (d) true statement because of (2)

now as we have to mark the incorrect statement ,

so the correct answer is (b)  ∆G is positive for a spontaneous reaction
