The only Malayali to hold the post of President of the Indian National Congress (INC), is the Late Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair (1857 – 1934). He held the post in 1897 and was a lawyer, politician and activist.

In 1877, Sir C. Sankaran Nair took his Arts Degree from the Presidency College, Madras and in 1879, he got the law Degree from the Madras Law College. He gradually moved to the position of Advocate-General to the Government, a position he held until 1908.

He was knighted by the King in 1912 and held several important positions in the government. As the Indian National movement stepped up its activities towards attaining freedom from the British, Sir C. Sankaran Nair played an active role within the INC to achieve this.
