We factorise this by the method of taking out a common factor.

• (2a + b)² - 6a - 3b - 4

= (2a + b)² - [3 (2a + b) - 4]

= (2a + b) [(2a + b) - 3 - 4]

= (2a + b) [(2a + b) - 7]

= (2a + b)(2a + b -7)
