This reaction is the decomposition of green coloured ferrous sulphate crystals into ferric oxide, Sulphur dioxide and Sulphur trioxide gas.

Actually what happens is, Ferrous sulphate is present in the green coloured crystal form due to the presence of 7 molecules of water of crystallization.

These water molecules of crystallization provide green colour to ferrous sulphate.

At the time of decomposition,when heat is applied to the crystals,first the 7 molecules of water of crystallization evaporates and then an anhydrous (means without any water molecule) ferrous sulphate is formed which is white in colour and on further decomposition,this anhydrous ferrous sulphate gives ferric oxide, Sulphur dioxide and Sulphur trioxide gases.

A smell of burning sulphur is obtained in the reaction due to the formation of Sulphur dioxide gas.
