Hockey! A dying Sport
In the past, the sport of hockey garnered a lot of media attention and was also favored by many sports enthusiasts.
However, on 2nd March 2010, India lost to Australia with a score of 2-5. This losing streak continued against England, Spain and South Africa.
In the 1970s, hockey was traditionally played on grass fields. As Indian players thrived on grass fields, they did not face a major competition. However, the international hockey Federation changed the rules and made it mandatory to play the international game on synthetic Astroturf surfaces.
These Astroturf grounds are very expensive and not easy to play on. The Indian layers were more used to playing on the grass surfaces. The Astroturf surfaces favored the physical attributes of the European players, as it encouraged the technical skills and passing skills of these players. Thereafter, Germany and Australia have dominated this sport.
Some other factors that have affected the game is:
- This game is not played and taught in school.
- Moreover, playing a game of cricket is cheaper and more feasible than playing games like hockey which require many players and a huge ground.
- Also, hockey does not generate a lot of advertising income.
- Media also plays a vital role in encouraging the people to appreciate or follow a game.
It is high time that the corporate sector and media work together to build the reputation of this game and give it back its previous glory.
