Given

2x+3y=5,x-y=10 find x and y

To find

Find the value of x and y

Solution

Solve this question by elimination method

  • 2x + 3y = 5 ---(i)
  • x - y = 10 ----(ii)

Multiply (i) by 1 and multiply (ii) by 3

  • 2x + 3y = 5
  • 3x - 3y = 30

Adding both the equation

=> (2x + 3y) + (3x - 3y) = 5 + 30

=> 2x + 3y + 3x - 3y = 35

=> 5x = 35

=> x = 35/5 = 7

By substitution method

By substitution methodsubstitute the value of x in equation (i)

=> 2x + 3y = 5

=> 2 × 7 + 3y = 5

=> 14 + 3y = 5

=> 3y = 5 - 14

=> 3y = -9

=> y = -9/3 = -3

Verification

Putting the value of x and y in both the equation

  • 2x + 3y = 5

LHS

=> 2x + 3y

=> 2 × 7 + 3 × (-3)

=> 14 - 9

=> 5 = RHS verified

  • x - y = 10

LHS

=> x - y

=> 7 - (-3)

=> 7 + 3

=> 10 = RHS verified
