2x+y=9-----(i)\\x+y=7-----(ii)\\

Subtracting both equations we get ;

2x+y = 9\\x  +y = 7\\------\\x=2

This is because due to subtraction x, y and 7 becomes negative and y got eliminated.

Putting value of x in (ii) equation ;

2+y=7\\y=7-2\\y=5
