Step-by-step explanation:

2x^2+3x-2=0

2x^2+4x-x-2=0

2x(x+2)-1(x+2)=0

(2x-1)(x+2)=0

x=1/2 or x = -2

Given :-

2x² + 3x - 2

Steps to follow for splitting the middle term :-

  • Multiply the coefficient of the first and last term.

  • Find the pairs of multiples.

  • Choose one pair which makes the coefficient of the middle term either by addition or subtraction. use trial and error method.

Here, coefficient of first term = 2 and last term = 2

➡ 2 × 2 = 4

Pairs of multiples :- 1 and 4, 2 and 2

Coefficient of middle term = 3

1 and 4 makes 3 by subtracting 1 from 4.

➡ 2x² + (4x - 1x) - 2 = 0

➡ 2x² + 4x - x - 2 = 0

➡ 2x(x + 2) - 1(x + 2) = 0

➡ (x + 2) (x - 1)

By equating both factors by 0, we get

x = -2 or x = 1
