Step-by-step explanation:

2x² + x + 4 = 0

=> 2x² + x = - 4

=> x² + (1/2) x = -2

(We need to use half the coefficient of x.  That coefficient is 1/2.  Half of that is 1/4.)

=> ( x + 1/4 )² = -2 + (1/4)²

=> ( x + 1/4 )² = -2 + 1/16

=> ( x + 1/4 )² = -32/16 + 1/16

=> ( x + 1/4 )² = -31 / 16

=> x + 1/4 = ±√31 i / 4

=> x = - 1/4 ± √31 i / 4

      =  ( -1 ± √31 i ) / 4
