Original length of board = 12¼ feet.
Length cut off = 3½

Remaining part =
12 \frac{1}{4} - 3 \frac{1}{2} \\ = \frac{49}{4} - \frac{7}{2} \\ = \frac{49 - 14}{4} \\ = \frac{35}{4} feet \\ or \: 8 \frac{3}{4} feet
