Savitribai Phule was a teacher, reformer and social activist, who fought against the discrimination faced by women in the Indian Society through her education and social reform work in the 19th century. She was one of the first Indians, who took steps to remove the social inequalities faced by women, by opening the first girls' school in Bhide Wada, Pune in 1848. After her marriage to Jyotirao Phule, she took part in the social reform movement started by Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, against the discrimination faced by women in the Indian Society. Savitribai Phule not only fought against the discrimination faced by women, but also opened the first girls' school in Bhide Wada, Pune in 1848. She believed in educating women and fought against the discrimination faced by them. She was the first female teacher in India. She was the first Indian woman to start a school for girls and the first woman to write and publish a book in Marathi and was an early reformer in the Indian Independence Movement.
