Example 8.
A train initially at rest accelerates at a constant rate x
for time t, and then decelerates at a constant rate y for
the remaining time. If the total time of its journey is t
seconds, then find in terms of t, x and y
(i) the maximum velocity attained
(ii) total distance travelled

Answer:

(xy/x+y)t

Explanation:

let Maximum velocity=V

from v=u+at

now at intialltly at rest of time t1 is

V=0+xt1

similarly, 0=V-yt2

from the above equations

t1=v/x & t2=v/y

t1+t2 = v/x+v/y =t

v = (xy/x+y)t
