if 1 is subtracted from -3.4 then new number is -4.4

Given:

  • -3.4 is a number on the real number line
  • 1 is subtracted from -3.4

To Find:

  • new number

Solution:

  • Numbers with a negative sign are less than zero
  • Right of zero represented by ‘+’ sign and to the left of zero represented by ‘–’ sign.
  • + sign numbers can be denoted as simply numbers
  • On a number line the number increases as we move to the right and decreases as we move to the left.

As 1 need to be subtracted from -3.4 hence we need to go 1 on the left side of 3.4

on going 1 left  (or 10 steps of 0.1) of -3.4 , number is -4.4

Hence if 1 is subtracted from -3.4 then new number is -4.4
