putting all x containing numbers in left

 \frac{5x}{7}  +  \frac{x}{4}  -  \frac{4x}{8}  = 3 - 5 -  \frac{1}{2}

 \frac{40x + 14x - 28x}{56}  =  \frac{6 - 10 - 1}{2}

 \frac{26x}{28}  =  - 5

x =  -  \frac{5 \times 28}{26}

x =   - \frac{140}{26}  =  - 5.38
