When bracket is open, the number outside the bracket get multiplied with all of the numbers present inside the bracket.

3(a + 1) = 9(a - 4)

Opening ( ) brackets, we get

3 × a + 3 × 1 = 9 × a - 9 × 4

3a + 3 = 9a - 36

3a - 9a = 36 - 3

- 6a = 33

a = 33 / - 6

a = 11 / - 2

a = - 11 / 2

Hence,

Value of a = - 11 / 2
