3. A gaseous compound containing hydrogen and carbon is decomposed and found to contain 82.66% C and 17.34% H by
mass. The mass of 232 mL of the gas, measured at STP, is found to be 0.602 g. What is the molecular formula of the
compound? (Enter your answer using the format CO2 for CO2 or Al(OH)3 for Al(OH)3.)

Answer:

Solution :

82.66 g c / 12.0107 g c = 1 mol c

= 6.8822 mol c

17.34 g H / 1.0079 g H = 1 mol H

= 17.204 mol H

Now 6.8822 mol c / 6.8822 mol = 1 C

17.204 mol H / 6.8822 mol = 5 / 2 H

2 ( 1 ) C = 2 C

2 ( 5 / 2 ) H = 5 H
