Sprinters run at top speed. They exert all their energy into those few seconds. This is a primarily Anaerobic exercise. Their lactic acid builds up quickly as they exert themselves. Marathon runners run for multiple hours (not just one) at a more sustainable speed. They are not using all their energy up from the beginning. They are using their aerobic systems and the lactic acid builds up slowly. They also train differently. Sprinters train running 50m, 100m, 200m. Marathon runners go out on 10 - 20 mile runs, with occasional shorter tempo runs.
