卄モㄥㄥ口 爪丹匕モ ㄚ口∪尺 丹れS山モ尺 工S:

1) The compound X is ethanol (C2H5OH).

2) When ethanol reacts with sodium, sodium ethoxide is formed and hydrogen gas is released.

2C2H5OH + 2Na ------> 2C2H5ONa + H2

The presence of this gas is tested by bringing a flame near it. If the gas burns with a 'pop' sound, then the gas is hydrogen.

3) When ethanol is heated with alkaline potassium permanganate or acidified poatssium dichromate, it gets oxidised to ethanoic acid. Thus, Y is ethanoic acid.
