3. A person buys postage stamps of denomination of Rs 1, Rs 2 and Rs 5 in the radio
5:3:2. He pays Rs 420 to a cashier in all. Find the numbers of postage stamps of
each kind.​

  • Ratio of postage stamps of is ratio 5:3:2.
  • Sum of cost of all postage stamps is Rs.420

Solution:-

➥ Let the number of postage stamps of denomination Rs. 1 be 5x

Cost of stamp of demonation of Rs.1

= 5x × 1

= Rs.5x

➥ Let the number of postage stamps of denomination Rs. 2 be 3x

Cost of stamp of demonation of Rs.2

= 3x × 2

= Rs.6x

➥ Let the number of postage stamps of denomination Rs. 5 be 2x

Cost of stamp of demonation of Rs.5

= 2x × 5

= Rs.10x

According to given conditions;

Sum of cost of all postage stamps is Rs.420

➟ 5x + 6x + 10x = 420

➟ 21x = 420

➟ x = 420 ÷ 21

➟ x = 20

∴x = 20

➥ Number of postage stamps of denomination Rs. 1

= 5x

= 5 × 20

= 100 stamps

➥ Number of postage stamps of denomination Rs. 2

= 3x

= 3 × 20

= 60 stamps

➥ Number of postage stamps of denomination Rs. 5

= 2x = 2 × 20 = 40 stamps
