A solid weighs 1.5kgf in air and 0.9kgf in a liquid of density 1.2x10 3 kg m -3 .calculate relative density of solid.

Expert Answer:

Weight of fluid displaced = Apparent decrease in weight = 1.5 - 0.9 = 0.6 kgf

Mass of fluid displaced = 0.6 kgf

Volume of solid = mass/density = (0.6/(1.2×103) = 0.5 × 10-3 /m3

Weight of the solid in the air = 1.5 kgf

Mass of solid = 1.5 kg

Density of solid = mass/density = 1.5/(0.5 x 10-3) = 3×103 kg/m3

Thus,

Relative density = (3 x 103 kg/m3 )/ (1 x 103 kg/m3) = 3
