Let the common ratio be a.

7a - 5a=14=2a

a=7

10a-7a=3a=21

X gets $21 more than Y.

Answer:

X gets $70

&

Total money = $154

Step-by-step explanation:

Given :

A sum of money is divided among three persons,

X, Y and Z, in the ratio 10 : 7 : 5 .

If Y gets $14 more than Z,

how much will X get

and what is the total sum' of money?

Solution :

Statement 1 :

A sum of money is divided among three persons,

X, Y and Z, in the ratio 10 : 7 : 5 .

Let the ratio be,

X : Y : Z = 10a : 7a : 5a ,.

⇒ X = 10 a ,

⇒ Y = 7a ,

⇒ Z = 5a

Statement 2 :

Y gets $14 more than Z,.

⇒ 7a = 5a + 14

⇒ 7a - 5a = 14

⇒ 2a = 14

⇒ a = 7,.

We know that,

X = 10 a = 10 × 7 = $70

Total money = X + Y + Z

⇒ 10a + 7a + 5a

⇒ 22 a = 22 × 7 = $154
