Spectrum:

Explanation:

(a)

  • The emission spectrum of a chemical element or chemical compound is the spectrum of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation emitted by an atom or molecule making a transition from a high energy state to a lower energy state.
  • The emission spectrum of each element is exclusive.
  • The emission spectrum has three types:
  1. Continuous spectrum
  2. Line spectrum
  3. Band spectrum

Continuous spectrum:

  • This spectrum depends only on the temperature of the source and is independent of the characteristic of the source.
  • Incandescent solids, liquids, Carbon arc, electric filament lamps, etc, are examples of a continuous spectrum.

Line spectrum:

  • Line spectrum is sharp lines of definite wavelengths.
  • It is the characteristic of emitting material.
  • It is used to identify gaseous substances.

Band Spectrum:

  • It consists of a number of bright bands with a sharp edge at one end but attenuation at the other end.
  • Band spectrum is obtained from molecules.
  • Using band spectrum the molecular structure of the substance being studied.

(b)

  • Molecular spectrum is observed when a molecule undergoes the absorption or emission of electromagnetic radiation with a resulting increase or decrease in energy.
  • The sum of the potential energy & the kinetic energy is termed as the total energy of a molecule.
