Spectrum:
Explanation:
(a)
- The emission spectrum of a chemical element or chemical compound is the spectrum of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation emitted by an atom or molecule making a transition from a high energy state to a lower energy state.
- The emission spectrum of each element is exclusive.
- The emission spectrum has three types:
- Continuous spectrum
- Line spectrum
- Band spectrum
Continuous spectrum:
- This spectrum depends only on the temperature of the source and is independent of the characteristic of the source.
- Incandescent solids, liquids, Carbon arc, electric filament lamps, etc, are examples of a continuous spectrum.
Line spectrum:
- Line spectrum is sharp lines of definite wavelengths.
- It is the characteristic of emitting material.
- It is used to identify gaseous substances.
Band Spectrum:
- It consists of a number of bright bands with a sharp edge at one end but attenuation at the other end.
- Band spectrum is obtained from molecules.
- Using band spectrum the molecular structure of the substance being studied.
(b)
- Molecular spectrum is observed when a molecule undergoes the absorption or emission of electromagnetic radiation with a resulting increase or decrease in energy.
- The sum of the potential energy & the kinetic energy is termed as the total energy of a molecule.
