Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

cost price = x

gain = 16%

sp = cp + gain

sp = x + 16x/100

sp = 116x/100

if it is sold for 20 more

sp = 116x/100  +  20

gain = 20%

sp = cp + gain

116x/100 + 20 = x + 20x/100

116x/100 + 20 = 120x/100

4x/100 = 20

4x = 2000

x = 2000/4

x= 500

500 is the cost price

Concept:

Percentage is the mathematical measurement of quantities, fractions and mathematical values out of total 100.

First replace the unknown component by variable and form a suitable a mathematical equation to find the required.

Given:

Given that, the the profit in selling an electric heater is 16%. If we sold for Rs 20 more, there would have been a gain of 20%.

Find:

We have to find the cost price of electric heater.

Solution:

Let the cost price be = 100x

Selling price of heater if the gain is 16% = 100x*((100+16)/100) = (116*100x)/100 = 116x

So the initial selling price is = 116x

If the selling price is 20 more then the selling price = 116x + 20

If the gain is 20% then the selling price is = 100x*((100+20)/100) = 120x

According to condition the suitable mathematical equation is,

116x+20 = 120x

120x-116x = 20

4x = 20

x = 20/4

x = 5

Thus the cost price is = 100x = 100*5 = Rs. 500

Hence the cost price of electric heater is (a) Rs. 500.
