Given:

An observer 2.25 m tall is 42.75 m away from a chimney

To find:

The height of the chimney

Solution:

As per the given diagram

In ΔABC

  • tan 45° = AB/BC
  • 1 = AB/BC
  • AB = BC

as we know that man is 42.75 m away from the chimney so

  • BC = 42.75 m

As per the diagram BE is the height of the chimney where

  • AE = AB + BE
  • AE = 42.75 + CD
  • AE = 42.75 + 2.25
  • AE = 45 m

So the height of the chimney is 45 m
