  • The net sown area in India is about 46.24%
  • forest occupy about 22.78% of the total area
  • the culturable waste land covers nearly 4.17 % of the total area
  • The fallow land covers about 80% of the total area
  • the land under permanent pastures and tree crops is only 5%
  • nearly 14% of the land is not available for cultivation

The following reasons are responsible for not increasing much land under forest from 1960-1961:

  • Industrialist want to earn more and more profits
  • people are ignorant of the disastrous effect of deforestation
  • illegal clearing of forest for industrial and domestic purposes
