Let x be the no. of votes polled for the losing candidate

Hence the winning candidate secured (x+98) votes

Total no. of votes polled = x+(x+98)+68

                                         = 2x+166

The winning candidate secured 52% of the valid votes polled

No. of valid votes = 2x+98

i.e., 52% of (2x+98) = x+98

   \frac{52(2x+98)}{100} = x+98

26x+1274 = 25x+2450

x = 1176

Hence the total no. of votes polled = 2352+166

                                                           = 2518

Hence 2518 votes were polled
